The Glasgow Group: Portfolio ShowsThe origins of the Portfolio Show began in early Autumn 1999. Some members of the Group thought that we could offer to our *Society Members original unframed work at a price less than the usual framed gallery work. We decided to go for a late November date. In keeping with the spirit of the season it was thought that a domestic venue would be better than a gallery and that for our valued Society Members we would supply a free buffet with wine. The event proved so successful that there were calls to repeat it the following year. It was suggested that the Group broaden its invitation to include supporters on our general mailing list and their friends. Clearly a domestic setting would not be practical and so the Group began to think about the possibility of amalgamating the idea of presenting original high quality unframed work at affordable prices and providing a quality menu in suitable commercial premises at a modest price The Group had contacts with a well known Greek Restaurant in Glasgow , Cafe Serghei , with its large spacious interior (it had been a former bank) this proved an ideal venue. The combination of a quality menu and quality unframed work available for perusal and sale in browsers at affordable prices was a winning combination and the event became as much a social occasion as it was an artistic event
The format of our Artists Fair/Portfolio Show was to have unframed work exhibited in transparent sleeves in browsers. The format also enabled the Group to invite a significant amount of additional artists from Glasgow and the west of Scotland than was possible with our main annual exhibition, it also allowed us to have a larger body of European Artists. Held for the first time in commercial premises Cafe Serghei provided a high quality pre-booked lunch. This one day artistic/social event proved very successful and popular with both artists and the general public. Glasgow Group were able to invite 12 European artists to exhibit and approximately 30 resident Scottish artists. Glasgow Group now hold this event annually , usually in late November.
